Summer is a great time for fun and adventure, but it's also a chance to teach kids about taking care of our planet. Here are some eco-friendly summer activities that kids will enjoy and learn from at the same time.
Organize a nature scavenger hunt in a local park or nature reserve. Make a list of things to find, like different leaves, rocks, flowers, and insects. This helps kids explore the outdoors and learn about nature.
Gardening is a fun way for kids to connect with nature. Start a small vegetable garden in your yard or use pots if you don't have much space. Kids can help plant seeds, water the plants, and watch them grow. Check out these food & farming lesson plans to try!
Get creative with crafts using materials that would otherwise be thrown away. Use old magazines, cardboard, and plastic bottles to make art projects. Make bird feeders from milk cartons or planters from plastic bottles.
Playing with water is a must in the summer heat, but it can be done sustainably. Instead of running the hose all day, set up a small kiddie pool and reuse the water to water plants afterward. Create a DIY sprinkler using a recycled plastic bottle with holes poked in it and attach it to the hose for a fun way to cool off.
Encourage kids to start a nature journal where they can write down their observations, draw pictures, and note their thoughts about the environment. Take them on walks or hikes and have them record interesting plants, animals, or insects they see.
Instead of driving, go for bike rides or hikes. Plan family bike trips to local parks or nature trails, and make it an adventure by packing a picnic with homemade snacks.
Take a trip to your local farmer’s market and let kids pick out fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables. You can also make it a cooking project by preparing meals together using the ingredients you bought.
If you live or vacation near a beach or lake, organize a family cleanup day. Give the kids gloves and bags to collect trash along the shore. Plus, it's a great way to spend time together as a family while doing something good for the environment.
These activities are not only fun but also teach important lessons about sustainability. Enjoy your summer while making a positive impact on the planet!Sign up to get the latest on sales, new releases and more …
