How to Avoid Harmful Plastic From Clothes

We already know that plastics in kids clothe are a problem for the environment, and potentially their health. I know that it seems all but impossible to avoid plastic clothes for your kids, but I promise, it’s not always painful! And if you can’t eliminate them entirely, there are some great harm reduction strategies. Here’s how we at Jackalo recommend getting started:

1. Go Natural

Look for natural fibers like organic cotton, linen, and ethical wool. These are all fibers that are more sustainable and better for your health. At Jackalo, we produce almost exclusively in organic cotton.

2. Segment Their Wardrobe

I know athleisure is in, but as one Jackalo parent says, “save the sports clothes for sports.” If your kid is desperate to be sporty, look for organic cotton knit sweats, over ones with polyester.

3. Dress for the Weather

For outerwear, only choose waterproof when the weather calls for it. Otherwise, layer with a cotton jacket over sweats or ethical wool. When the weather calls for rain or snow, shop from companies that specifically use PFAS-free membranes like fairechild.

4. Wash Limited Synthetics Properly

With a Girlfriend microfiber filter or Guppy Bag to keep the microplastics out of the water, and dispose of the collected plastics properly.

5. Dust like a pro

Wet dust around the house. Using a wet dustrag helps nanoplastics adhere to your dusting cloth, rather than getting aspirated into the air (as they will do with a duster or using your vacuum to dust.
