How to Cut Kids' Clothing Waste
Kid's outgrow clothes quickly, and that can mean a LOT of clothing waste. In this article in The Washington Post, journalist Lavonne Roberts highlights the enormous problem of clothing waste, and highlights solutions -- including Jackalo! Roberts highlights the scale of the problem:
The effect of clothing waste is staggering. According to the Council for Textile Recycling, the average American throws away 70 pounds of clothing and other textiles annually. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, of the 17 million tons of textiles produced in 2018, only 2.5 million tons were recycled. As a result, for every five garments produced, the equivalent of three ends up in a landfill or incinerated each year. Synthetics such as polyester, made from petroleum, are not biodegradable and shed minuscule plastic particles.
We can all have a part in the solution. Buying less, buying better, buying second-hand and sharing with friends are all wonderful ways to have an impact.
